CO2 mineralization curing steel slag-fly ash-Portland cement ternary paste: Mechanical properties, microstructure and life cycle assessment

Authors: YI Guo-yang, TIAN Wei, SHI Jun-jie, GUO Jian, CHENG Xu

Using solid waste as a substitute for conventional cement has become an important way to reduce carbon emissions. This paper attempted to utilize steel slag (SS) and fly ash (FA) as supplementary cementitious material by utilizing CO2 mineralization curing technology. This study examined the dominant and interactive influences of the residual water/cement ratio, CO2 pressure, curing time, and SS content on the mechanical properties and CO2 uptake rate of CO2 mineralization curing SS-FA-Portland cement ternary paste specimens. Additionally, microstructural development was analyzed. The findings demonstrated that each factor significantly affected compressive strength and CO2 uptake rate, with factor interactions becoming more pronounced at higher SS dosages (>30%), lower residual water/cement ratios (0.1βˆ’0.15), and CO2 pressures of 0.1βˆ’0.3 MPa. Microscopic examinations revealed that mineralization primarily yielded CaCO3 and silica gel. The residual w/c ratio and SS content significantly influenced the CaCO3 content and crystallinity of the mineralization products. Post-mineralization curing, the percentage of pores larger than 50 nm significantly decreased, the proportion of harmless pores smaller than 20 nm increased, and pore structure improved. This study also found that using CO2 mineralization curing SS-FA-Portland cement solid waste concrete can significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Authors: Xu Bing, Zeng Rui-jing, Zheng Nian-ben, Sun Zhi-qiang

The nanofluid-based direct absorption solar collector (NDASC) ensures that solar radiation passing through the tube wall is directly absorbed by the nanofluid, reducing thermal resistance in the energy transfer process. However, further exploration is required to suppress the outward thermal losses from the nanofluid at high temperatures. Herein, this paper proposes a novel NDASC in which the outer surface of the collector tube is covered with functional coatings and a three-dimensional computat

Influence of Y and Nd on deformation mechanisms and tensile properties at room temperature of Mg-Zn-Gd alloy

Authors: LI Zhi-qiang, GUO He, HU Wen-xin, LU Yu-ming, WANG Xin-yuan, LIU Feng, ZHANG Li-wei, WANG Wei-li

The microstructure, fracture mechanisms, deformation modes, and their correlation with the mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Gd alloys were analyzed, considering the influence of Y and Nd additions. Increasing Y content and decreasing Nd content resulted in an increase in grain size from 17.2 to 29.2 ΞΌm, and two types of LPSO phases, 14H and 18R, formed in the alloy. The mechanical properties of the alloys were predominantly influenced by the LPSO phase, with the grain size effect being relatively minor. Based on this analysis, higher Y and lower Nd contents enhanced the tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of the alloys, with additional improvements observed following solid solution treatment. Changes in Y and Nd content caused a shift in fracture patterns, transitioning from ductile fracture to brittle fracture and then to mixed fracture. Following solid solution treatment, the alloy progressively transitions from intergranular to a combination of ductile and deconvolutional fracture. The deformation modes observed at each stage are as follows: an increase in LPSO phases and twins activates pyramidal slip and suppresses prismatic slip.

Effects of alloying elements M (Mn, Cr, Mo, Ni, Cu, and Si) on interface behavior of TiC(002)/Fe(011)

Authors: LI Jia-xin, HOU Guang-xin, JIA Peng, HU Li-hua, WANG Li-quan, WANG Xiang

Improving interfacial bonding and alloying design are effective strategies for enhancing mechanical properties of particle-reinforced steel matrix composites (SMCs). This study prepared SMCs with uniformly distributed TiCP in matrix using master alloying method. The TiC(002)/Fe(011) interface model was established based on the orientation relationship of (011)Fe//(002)TiC, and [100]Fe//[100]TiC. The effects of single and co-doping of alloying elements (Mn, Cr, Mo, Ni, Cu and Si) on the interface bonding behavior of TiC/Fe in composites were investigated in conjunction with first-principles. The results demonstrate that the interface between TiC and matrix is continuous and stable. Compared to the undoped TiC/Fe interface, single-doping Mn, Cr, and Mo can improve the stability of TiC/Fe interface and enhance tensile strength. Conversely, single-doping with Ni, Cu, and Si reduced the interface stability and marginally reduces tensile strength. Relative to the undoped and singly Ni-doped TiC/Fe interfaces, the co-doping Ni-Mo boosts binding energy and separation work at the TiC/Fe interface, which is conducive to the interface bonding between TiCP and matrix, and thus improves the mechanical properties of composites. Thus, in the alloying design of TiC particle-reinforced low-alloy SMCs, incorporating Mn, Cr, Mo, and Ni into matrix can enhance the overall mechanical properties of composites.

Generation of axial chain rockbursts in deep tunnels with drilling and blasting methodology in locked-in stress zone

Authors: LI Hong-pu, HE Ben-guo, FENG Xia-ting, NIU Wen-jing, MA Tao

Axial chain rockbursts (ACRs) repeatedly occur in deep tunnels during drilling and blasting methodology (D&B) within locked-in stress zones, severely hindering construction progress. In extremely cases, ACRs can persist for 7βˆ’10 d and affect areas exceeding 20 m along tunnel axis. Through integrated geological investigations and microseismic (MS) monitoring, the geological characteristics, MS activity patterns, and formation mechanisms of ACRs were analyzed. In tectonically active regions, locked-in stress zones arise from interactions between multiple structural planes. Blasting dynamic disturbances during tunnel excavation in these zones trigger early slippage along structural planes and fractures in the surrounding rock, with MS events developing ahead of the working face. High-energy MS events dominate during the development and occurrence stages of ACRs, extending 20βˆ’30 m (3βˆ’4 tunnel diameters) ahead of the working face. Following the ACRs, low-energy MS events primarily occur behind the working face. Tensile fracturing is the predominant failure mode during ACRs. Shear and mixed fractures primarily occur within the ACRs zone during the intra-ACR phase. Monitoring MS event locations ahead of the working face provides a reliable approach for prewarning potential ACR-prone zones.

Bauxite tailing (BT) slurry has been generated and accumulated in large quantities, posing a threat to the green and sustainable development of the alumina industry. The regression equation between the actual water content and mud-water separation rate was established to achieve efficient resource utilization, and the feasibility of foam lightweight soil (FLS) prepared from BT was investigated. The effects of industrial waste residues (fly ash and slag powder) on the properties of FLS were studied. Meanwhile, the micro-mechanisms were revealed by XRD, SEM-EDS, and TG-DSC. The results revealed that fly ash reduced the workability and compressive strength of FLS. Slag powder can significantly enhance the compressive strength of FLS, which increased by 18.60%βˆ’23.26%, 17.07%βˆ’58.54% and 12.12%βˆ’52.12%, respectively. Besides, slag powder can improve the long-term water stability performance and enhance carbonation resistance. XRD and thermal analyses showed that adding fly ash decreased the hydration degree of FLS, leading to a decrease in the hydration products. Slag powder improved the pore structure and compacted the skeleton structure of FLS. This study would provide an effective way to realize the resource utilization of BT, fly ash, and slag powder, with certain socio-economic and environmental benefits.

To investigate the effects of water and cyclic loading on dolomite’s mechanical properties during deep mining, mechanical experiments on non-pressure water absorption and cyclic loading were conducted. The findings reveal that the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio of dolomite fluctuate with increasing water content. The mass of water absorption is positively correlated with time and the water absorption stage can be divided into three stages: accelerated, decelerated, and stabilized stages. Duri

Optimization and engineering practice of large-diameter drilling hole-anchoring hole spacing based on stress relief-support reinforcement cooperative effect

Authors: GUO Wei-yao, WANG Xiang-yu, YIN Li-ming, ZHENG Yong-sheng, JI Xin-bo, LIU Guang-zhao, WU Zhen

Large-diameter drilling method is a prevalent method for preventing and controlling rock burst, and the spacing between the large-diameter drilling hole and anchoring hole is a critical factor influencing the roadway stability and relief effectiveness. In this study, a mechanical model for optimal matching between the large-diameter drilling hole and anchoring hole was established following the principle of synergistic control. The influence of large-diameter drilling hole diameter on the optimal spacing under the synergistic relief effect was investigated by integrating theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and field practice. The results suggest that the hole spacing achieved a synergistic effect in a certain range when the optimal hole spacing increased linearly with the hole diameter. For instance, when the anchoring hole diameter was 20 mm, an increase in the aperture ratio from 5 to 10 brought about an increase in the optimal spacing from 0.25 m to 0.45 m. Additionally, the vertical stress between the large-diameter drilling hole and anchor hole increased nonlinearly under the condition of constant pore ratio but varying hole spacing. Both excessively small and excessively large hole spacings were detrimental to the pressure relief effect. In the engineering practice, optimizing the hole spacing from 0.55 m to 0.45 m in the 1208 working face contributed to reducing coal body drilling cuttings and the roadway moving quantity by 33% and 19.2%, respectively. This demonstrates that the pressure relief-support reinforcement synergistic effect should be fully considered in optimization design.

Authors: WEN Tao, ZHONG Zhi-huai, ZHU Sai-sai, ZHOU Man-man, WANG Pei, CHAI Lin-jiang, LIU Guo-qing, PANG Bo, GONG Xing

In this work, tensile mechanical behavior of 316L steels fabricated by three different processing methods (casting, powder extrusion printing (PEP) and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)) was studied in the presence of liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) and air at 350 Β°C. The results show that all three steels tested in LBE are not subjected to evident degradation of tensile elongation to failure and strength compared to those tested in air, suggesting that LME does not occur regardless of the processing methods. The LPBF 316L steel exhibits the highest yield strength (420βˆ’435 MPa), followed by casting 316L (~242 MPa) and PEP 316L (146βˆ’165 MPa). Ultimate tensile strength of three steels is comparable and ranges from 427 to 485 MPa. The PEP and casting 316L steels have similar total elongation to failure (i.e., 40.0%βˆ’43.8%), whereas this property decreases markedly to 18.6%βˆ’19.5% for the LPBF 316L steel. The superior strength and relatively low ductility of the LPBF 316L steel can be attributed to nanosized dislocations trapped at cell structures which can produce a remarkable strengthening effect to the steel matrix. By contrast, due to massive residual micropores, the PEP 316L steel has the lowest strength.

Dynamic disturbances certainly reduce shear strength of rock joints, yet the mechanism needs deeper explanation. We investigate the shear behavior of a rough basalt joint by conducting laboratory shear experiments. Constant and superimposed oscillating normal loads are applied at the upper block. Meanwhile, the bottom block moves at a constant shear rate. We investigate the shear behavior by: 1) altering the normal load oscillation frequency with a same shear rate, 2) altering the shear rate wit

Shear fracture behavior and fracture fractal characteristics of granite under adverse effect of cyclic heating

Authors: JIANG Tian-qi, CHEN Bing, ZHANG Qing-song, SHEN Bao-tang, BAI Ji-wen, LIU Ren-tai, CHEN Meng-jun, SASAOKA Takashi

Deep geothermal extraction processes expose rock masses to frequent and significant temperature fluctuations. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the shear fracture mechanisms and crack propagation behaviors in rocks under the influence of cyclic heating is imperative for optimizing geothermal energy extraction. This study encompasses several critical aspects under cyclic heating conditions, including the assessment of stress distribution states, the characterization of two-dimensional fracture paths, the quantitative analysis of three-dimensional damage characteristics on fracture surfaces, and the determination of the fractal dimension of debris generated after the failure of granite. The test results demonstrate that cyclic heating has a pronounced adverse effect on the physical and mechanical properties of granite. Consequently, stress tends to develop and propagate in a direction perpendicular to the two-dimensional fracture path. This leads to an increase in the extent of tensile damage on the fracture surface and accelerates the overall rock failure process. This increases the number of small-sized debris, raises the fractal dimension, and enhances the rock’s rupture degree. In practical enhanced geothermal energy extraction, the real-time monitoring of fracture propagation within the reservoir rock mass is achieved through the analysis of rock debris generated during the staged fracturing process.

Mo2CTx MXene is a novel two-dimensional material, which is generally made by the etching of inorganic acid solutions, such as hydrofluoric acid (HF) or hydrochloric acid (HCl). Those solutions are always corrosive and hazardous. In this paper, a mild organic acid, acetic acid (CH3COOH), was selected to synthesize Mo2CTx MXene. 30 mL acetic acid (HAc) with the concentration of 13 mol/L was mixed with 2 g acetate (CH3COONa or CH3COOK) and 10 mL water to make etching solution (NaAc+HAc or KAc+HAc).

Achieving low-porosity and high-strength 2219 aluminum alloy joints through coupling of laser beam oscillation and post-weld heat treatment

Authors: ZHU Liang-jin, DONG Guo-jiang, YANG Zhuo-yun, BI Jiang

Laser welding is a highly promising joining method for Al alloys. However, certain limitations such as elevated thermal input and keyhole instability are associated with its application in medium-thickness aluminium alloy plates. To address these issues, circular oscillating laser welding combined with post-weld heat treatment was employed to improve the formation quality and mechanical properties of the welds. The effects of the frequency of circular oscillating laser on the forming quality, microstructure, and properties of the welds were analyzed. At an oscillation frequency of 200 Hz, the grain size in the weld zone was reduced compared to single laser welding, and the maximum tensile strength of the weld was observed to reach (264.96Β±1.33) MPa, representing approximately 61.19% of the base metal. Following the post-weld heat treatment of "solid solution and artificial aging", the grain boundary segregation was diminished. Nanoscale precipitated phases are present in the weld zone. Furthermore, the tensile strength was augmented to (386.35Β±5.65) MPa, representing approximately 89.23% of the strength of the base metal. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis and technological reference for the circular oscillating laser welding of medium-thickness 2219-T6 aluminium alloy plates.

However, the excessive use of lime can result in pipeline blockage and inadequate recovery of associated precious metals. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new flotation process that minimizes or eliminates the use of lime. In this paper, a novel Fe³⁺-Cu²⁺-butyl xanthate process was developed as an alternativ

Magnesium alloys as medical implant materials necessitate a lower and adjustable corrosion rate for clinical applications. The microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ31Mn-xEr (x=0.1, 0.5, 1.2) alloys were systematically investigated using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), combined with Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. The findings showed that the alloying element Er refined the grain structure during solidification by increasing the nucleation rate and forming a secondary phase of Al3Er with Al. The Er and Mg in the matrix co-oxidize to form a dense MgO/Er2O3 composite oxide, preventing the formation of loose magnesium hydroxide/basic magnesium carbonate. The trace alloying element Mn interacts with impurities Fe in the magnesium matrix to form an AlFeMn second phase, reducing micro-galvanic corrosion driving force. Electrochemical testing in a 3.5% NaCl solution demonstrated a marked reduction in corrosion rate from 10.46 mm/a (AZ31Mn alloy) to 0.44 mm/a (AZ31Mn-1.2Er alloy). This research offers a reference for searching for corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy and degradable medical magnesium alloy materials.

Solar energy storage by dark Mn-doped CaO-based heat carriers

Authors: Xu Ting-ting, Feng Qian-nian, Wei Yuan, Fu Rui-cheng, Hu Ying-chao

CaO-based heat carriers have shown great prospects for thermochemical energy storage in concentrated solar power systems due to the features such as rich reserves, environmental safety, high energy storage densities and high operation temperatures. However, the density decay because of sintering and poor direct solar absorption of white CaO-based heat carriers are the two main obstacles lying on the way to the realistic applications. This work introduced dark Mn-based inert support into calcium heat carriers, attempting to solve the above problems simultaneously. As an inert support, the finely dispersed Ca2MnO4 functioned as the metal framework to resist CaCO3/CaO sintering. Consequently, the cyclic stability of CaO-based heat carriers, resulting in the high energy storage densities of ~2000 kJ/kg even over 20 cycles. As a dark material, Ca2MnO4 successfully darkened CaO-based heat carriers, thereby greatly enhanced the direct solar absorption. In addition, the granulation of CaO-based heat carriers was also studied. The pellets showed satisfactory attrition resistance with only 9.85 wt% mass loss over 3200 cycles. In general, good physicochemical performance of Mn-doped CaO-based heat carrier endows it with great prospects for solar energy storage.

Enhancing resistance of honeycomb sandwich panel under local impact through face sheet-core matching relationship

Authors: LEI Zi-ping, GAO Feng, DI Hao, LIU Jie-fu, WANG Zhong-gang

To enhance the resistance of honeycomb sandwich panel against local impact, this study delved into the matching relationship between face sheets and core. An integrated approach, combining experiment, simulation, and theoretical methods, was used. Local loading experiments were conducted to validate the accuracy of the finite element model. Furthermore, a control equation was formulated to correlate structural parameters with response modes, and a matching coefficient Ξ» (representing the ratio of core thickness to face sheet thickness) was introduced to establish a link between these parameters and impact characteristics. A demand-driven reverse design methodology for structural parameters was developed, with numerical simulations employed to assess its effectiveness. The results indicate that the proposed theory can accurately predict response modes and key indicators. An increase in the Ξ» bolsters the structural indentation resistance while concurrently heightens the likelihood of penetration. Conversely, a decrease in the Ξ» improves the resistance to penetration, albeit potentially leading to significant deformations in the rear face sheet. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the reverse design methodology significantly enhances the structural penetration resistance. Comparative analyses indicate that appropriate matching reduces indentation depth by 27.4% and indentation radius by 41.8% of the proposed structure.

Deformation warning and microseismicity assessment of collapse in fault development area of Yebatan Hydropower Station

Authors: Pei Shu-feng, Zhao Jin-shuai, Chen Bing-rui, Li Shao-jun, Jiang Quan, Xu Ding-ping, Wang Ze-nian

The collapse of rock masses in fault-developed zones poses significant safety challenges during the excavation of high-stress underground caverns. This study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of the collapse mechanisms of the cavern in the Yebatan Hydropower Station through using microseismic (MS) monitoring and displacement measurements. We developed a multi-parameter deformation early warning model that integrates three critical indicators: deformation rate, rate increment, and tangential angle of the deformation time curve. The results of the early warning model show a significant and abrupt increase in the deformation of the rock mass during the collapse process. The safety and stability of the local cavern in the face of excavation-induced disturbances are meticulously assessed utilizing MS data. Spatiotemporal analysis of the MS monitoring indicates a high frequency of MS events during the blasting phase, with a notable clustering of these events in the vicinity of the fault. These research results provide a valuable reference for risk warnings and stability assessments in the fault development zones of analogous caverns.

Influence of pre-compression and pre-aging on precipitation behavior in casting Mg-9.8Sn-3.0Zn alloy

Authors: LIU Yun, LIU Chao-qiang, NI Song, SONG Min

The effects of pre-compression and pre-aging on the age-hardening response and microstructure of Mg-9.8Sn-3.0Zn (wt.%) alloy have been investigated via hardness test and advanced electron microscopy. The alloy subjected to both pre-compression and pre-aging exhibits the most refined and densest distribution of precipitates upon aging at 200 ℃, leading to the superior age-hardening performance observed in the alloy. Comparatively, the alloy that underwent only pre-aging displayed a greater number density of precipitates than its counterpart that was neither pre-compressed nor pre-aged when both were aged to their peak conditions at 200 ℃, indicating an enhanced age-hardening response in the pre-aged alloy. The precipitates in these three peak-aged alloys consist of Mg2Sn and MgZn2 phases. The reason why the pre-aged alloy has a higher number density of precipitates than the directly aged alloy is that MgZn2 phase formed during pre-aging can serve as heterogeneous nucleation site for the formation of Mg2Sn. The reason why the pre-compression and pre-aged alloy has the highest number density of precipitates is that Mg3Sn and MgZn2 phases formed during pre-aging, alongside lattice defects introduced during pre-compression, collectively act as effective heterogeneous nucleation sites for the formation of Mg2Sn during the subsequent aging at 200 ℃.

Acoustic emission response and rupture evolution analysis of triaxial compression damage of hot dry rock under seawater fatigue dissolution

Authors: LI Cun-bao, LAN Ling, XIE He-ping, HU Jian-jun

Analyzing the fatigue damage characteristics of hot dry rock (HDR) affected by seawater thermal shock cycles is required for the efficient exploitation of HDR and the conservation of freshwater resources. Mechanical and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring tests were conducted during the triaxial compression of HDR at different confining pressures, temperatures, and numbers of seawater thermal shocks to investigate the seawater damage of HDR. The test results indicated an increase in the cumulative AE counts with increasing temperature and number of seawater thermal shocks, and a decrease in AE counts with increasing confining pressure. The effect of the number of seawater thermal shocks was significant. The AE counts were 276% higher at 15 than at 0 seawater thermal shocks. The b-value increased with the number of thermal shocks and stabilized after 5 shocks. Most of the damage was small fractures, which reduced the rock’s damage resistance. The AE time series under HDR triaxial compression exhibited multifractal features. High-energy AE events dominated the damage mechanism of HDR, indicating shear damage to the HDR. Therefore, this study can provide a reference for seawater as a heat transfer fluid in the design of geothermal energy resource extraction.

Permeable roads generally exhibit inferior mechanical properties and shorter service life than traditional dense-graded/impermeable roads. Furthermore, the incorporation of recycled aggregates in their construction may exacerbate these limitations. To address these issues, this study introduced a novel cement-stabilized permeable recycled aggregate material. A total of 162 beam specimens prepared with nine different levels of cement-aggregate ratio were tested to evaluate their permeability, ben

Damage evolution in sandstone under uniaxial cyclic loading and varying water contents: Theoretical and experimental investigation

Authors: ZHANG Sheng, BAI Wei, XU Ding-ping, ZHENG Hong, JIANG Quan, LI Zhi-wei

During underground excavation, the surrounding rock mass is subjected to complex cyclic stress, significantly impacting its long-term stability, especially under varying water content conditions where this effect is amplified. However, research on the mechanical response mechanisms of surrounding rock mass under such conditions remains inadequate. This study utilized acoustic emission (AE) and resistivity testing to monitor rock fracture changes, revealing the rock’s damage state and characterizing the damage evolution process during uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading. First, a damage variable equation was established based on AE and resistivity parameters, leading to the derivation of a corresponding damage constitutive equation. Uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading tests were then conducted on sandstone samples with varying water contents, continuously monitoring AE signals and resistivity, along with computed tomography scans before and after failure. The predictions from the damage constitutive equation were compared with experimental results. This comparison shows that the proposed damage variable equation effectively characterizes the damage evolution of sandstone during loading and unloading, and that the constitutive equation closely fits the experimental data. This study provides a theoretical basis for monitoring and assessing the responses of surrounding rock mass during underground excavation.

Effect of hot deformation on grain structure and quench sensitivity in 7085 aluminum alloy

Authors: LI Cheng-bo, ZHAO Cai, CAO Pu-li, ZHU Dai-bo, XIAO Bo

The effect of hot deformation on the quench sensitivity of the 7085 alloy was studied through hardness testing and microstructure characterization. The findings indicate that hot deformation enhances the quench sensitivity of the 7085 alloy, with the hardness difference between water quenching and air cooling increasing from 5.4% (before hot deformation) to 10.4% (after hot deformation). In the undeformed samples, the Al3Zr particles within the grains exhibit better coherent with the Al matrix.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of aged Mg-Gd-Y-Zr-Ag alloy sheets processed by different rolling routes

Authors: ZHU Yu-ting, CHEN Han, CHEN Zhi-yong, HAN Yu-xiang, JIANG Shu-nong, GAO Yong-hao, WAN Ying-chun, LIU Chu-ming

Microstructure and mechanical properties of aged Mg-10Gd-2Y-0.4Zr-0.4Ag alloy sheets prepared by different rolling routes were investigated. The results showed that the cross rolling aged (CRA) sheet possesses larger grain size than unidirectional rolling aged (URA) sheet due to the occurrence of dynamic recovery during rolling which reduces the dislocation density and delays dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The URA sheet has basal texture and RD-favored texture while CRA sheet has multiple-peak texture. Both sheets precipitate Ξ²' phase and CRA sheet exhibits a stronger aging response. The CRA sheet has higher yield strength and tensile strength than URA sheet, with reduced yield strength anisotropy but increased tensile strength anisotropy. Taking into account different strengthening mechanisms, although the finer grain size of URA sheet enhances grain boundary strengthening, CRA sheet is more responsive to aging, leading to superior aging-precipitated phase strengthening and consequently higher yield strength.

The first cycle of WD plays an important role in the entire WD cycles. X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was used as a non-destructive tool to quantitatively analyze microstructural changes of the mudstone due to the first cycle of WD. The test results show that WD leads to an increase of pore volume and pore connectivity in the mud

Phase transitions and surface property variations of bastnaesite in suspension roasting: A study of bastnaesite pyrolysis and cerium oxidation

Authors: CHENG Shao-kai, HAN Yue-xin, LI Wen-bo, ZHANG Ling-hui, GAO Peng, SUN Yong-sheng

Roasting bastnaesite concentrates is a crucial process in extracting rare earths. This study explored an efficient suspension roasting technology and investigated the bastnaesite pyrolysis and cerium (Ce) oxidation. Relevant analytical tests were applied to evaluate the phase and surface property variations of bastnaesite, and isothermal kinetic analysis of bastnaesite pyrolysis and Ce oxidation was performed. The results revealed that bastnaesite decomposed rapidly and accompanied by Ce oxidation, and the gas-solid products were identified as CO2, Ce7O12, La2O3, CeF3 and LaF3, with Ce oxidation restricted by bastnaesite pyrolysis. As roasting time prolonged, cracks and pores appeared on bastnaesite surface; the BET specific surface and pore diameter increased. In later roasting period, the pore diameter continued to increase but the specific surface decreased, assigned to particle fusion agglomeration and pore consolidation. Additionally, the surface C content reduced and Ce(β…£) content increased gradually as roasting progressed. The reaction kinetics all followed Avrami-Erofeev equations, the reaction orders of bastnaesite pyrolysis and Ce oxidation decreased with decreasing reaction temperature. The calculated activation energies at lower temperatures were higher than those calculated at higher temperatures. This study analyzed the bastnaesite reaction mechanism to supply a reference for the application of suspension roasting technology in bastnaesite smelting.

Flow field characteristics in high-speed train cabin: Negative effect of non-vertical air supply

Authors: WU Song-bo, LI Tian, ZHANG Ji-ye

Ventilation systems are critical for improving the cabin environment in high-speed trains, and their interest has increased significantly. However, whether air supply non-verticality deteriorates the cabin air environment, and the flow mechanism behind it and the degree of deterioration are not known. This study first analyzes the interaction between deflection angle and cabin flow field characteristics and ventilation performance. The results revealed that the interior temperature and pollutant concentration decreased slightly with increasing deflection angle, but resulted in significant deterioration of thermal comfort and air quality. This is evidenced by an increase in both draught rate and non-uniformity coefficient, an increase in the number of measurement points that do not satisfy the micro-wind speed and temperature difference requirements by about 5% and 15%, respectively, and an increase in longitudinal penetration of pollutants by a factor of about 5 and the appearance of locking regions at the ends of cabin. The results also show that changing the deflection pattern only affects the region of deterioration and does not essentially improve this deterioration. This study can provide reference and help for the ventilation design of high-speed trains.

Electroshocking treatment (EST), an efficient and rapid material treatment method, promotes microstructure evolution and improves mechanical properties. This study incorporates EST into the conventional cold rolling-quenching-tempering process of M50 steel and investigates the influence and mechanism of applying EST at different stages of the process on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the effect of EST on microstructure. The results show that EST can refine the grains of M50 (average reduction of 10.1% in grain size), homogenize the grain size distribution, reduce the dislocation density (20.9% in average), promote the dissolution of carbides in the matrix and distribute them more uniformly along the grain boundaries, resulting in the improvement of mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the specimen with the process flow of rolling-quenching-tempering-electroshocking showed excellent performance, with an increase in hardness of 1.4%, tensile strength of 17.7%, and elongation at break of 24.3% as compared to the specimen without EST. The tensile properties of the specimen with the process flow of rolling-electroshocking-quenching-tempering showed the best performance, with an increase in tensile strength of 30.0% and elongation at break of 30.7% as compared to the specimen without EST.

Flotation behavior and sulfidation mechanisms of stibiconite after sulfidation with sulfur

Authors: HUANG Yu-song, ZHENG Yong-xing, DAI Zhe, ZHANG Song

Flotation behavior of stibiconite after sulfidation roasting with sulfur at a high temperature and the sulfidation mechanisms were investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) combining with thermodynamic calculation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The XRD and thermodynamic analyses revealed that the Sb3O6(OH) was reduced into Sb2O4 and Sb2O3, and was transformed into Sb2S3 after introducing sulfur at high temperatures. Flotation test results show that flotation recovery of the stibiconite after sulfidation reaches 90.3%. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry tests confirm that adsorption capacity of sodium butyl xanthate (SBX) on surface of the roasted products has a positive relationship with S/Sb mole ratio. XPS analyses indicate that Sb-bearing species including mainly Sb2S3, Sb2O3 and Sb2(SO4)3 are formed at the surface of particle after sulfidation. The EPMA analyses verify that the Sb2S3 is generated at the outer layer of sample after sulfidation roasting, but the particle interior is mainly composed of antimony oxides. The sulfur atmosphere induces the outward migration of oxygen to form Sb2O4. Then, the Sb2O4 is transformed into Sb2O3 in two pathways, and the Sb2S3 is formed. These findings will provide theoretical support for recovering antimony from antimony oxide ores by xanthate-flotation methods.

A new damage constitutive model for rock strain softening based on an improved Logistic function

Authors: GUO Yun-peng, LIU Dong-qiao, YANG Sheng-kai, LI Jie-yu

This study proposed a new and more flexible S-shaped rock damage evolution model from a phenomenological perspective based on an improved Logistic function to describe the characteristics of the rock strain softening and damage process. Simultaneously, it established a constitutive model capable of describing the entire process of rock pre-peak compaction and post-peak strain softening deformation, considering the nonlinear effects of the initial compaction stage of rocks, combined with damage mechanics theory and effective medium theory. In addition, this research verified the rationality of the constructed damage constitutive model using results from uniaxial and conventional triaxial compression tests on Miluo granite, yellow sandstone, mudstone, and glutenite. The results indicate that based on the improved Logistic function, the theoretical damage model accurately describes the entire evolution of damage characteristics during rock compression deformation, from maintenance through gradual onset, accelerated development to deceleration and termination, in a simple and unified expression. At the same time, the constructed constitutive model can accurately simulate the stress-strain process of different rock types under uniaxial and conventional triaxial compression, and the theoretical model curve closely aligns with experimental data. Compared to existing constitutive models, the proposed model has significant advantages. The damage model parameters a, r and Ξ² have clear physical meanings and interact competitively, where the three parameters collectively determine the shape of the theoretical stress-strain curve.

Al-doped manganese dioxide (MnO2) was synthesized by simple hydrothermal method, and a controllable phase transition of the MnO2 crystal phase from Ξ² to Ξ΄ was achieved. The effects of Al doping concentration on the structure and electrochemical properties of electrode materials were studied in detail. The results show that the controlled synthesis requires a synergy between KMnO4, MnCl2 and AlCl3, and that Al3+ plays an important role. Compared with the pure phase MnO2, the crystallinity of Al-d

Because of actual requirement, shield machine always excavates with an inclined angle in longitudinal direction. Since many previous studies mainly focus on the face stability of the horizontal shield tunnel, the effects of tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure on the face stability of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel are not well investigated. A failure mechanism of a longitudinally inclined shield tunnel face is constructed based on the spatial discretization technique and

The cemented-gangue βˆ’fly-ash backfill (CGFB) prepared from coal-based solid waste materials commonly exhibits high brittleness, leading to an increased susceptibility to cracking. Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), acoustic emission (AE), and scanning electron microscopy tests were conducted on CGFB samples with recycled steel fiber (RSF) contents of 0, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% to assess the mechanical properties and damage evolution law of the CGFB. The research findings indicate that: 1) When RSF contents were 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%, respectively, compared to samples without RSF, the UCS decreased by 3.86%, 6.76%, and 15.59%, while toughness increased by 69%, 98%, and 123%; 2) The addition of RSFs reduced the post-peak stress energy activity and increased the fluctuations in the b-value; 3) As the RSF dosage increased from 0 to 1.5%, the per unit dissipated strain energy increased from 5.84 to 21.51, and the post-peak released energy increased from 15.07 to 33.76, indicating that the external energy required for the CGFB sample to fail increased; 4) The hydration products, such as C-S-H gel, ettringite, and micro-particle materials, were embedded in the damaged areas of the RSFs, increasing the frictional force at the interface between the RSF and CGFB matrix. The shape variability of the RSFs caused interlocking between the RSFs and the matrix. Both mechanisms strengthened the bridging effect of the RSFs in the CGFB, thereby improving the damage resistance capability of CGFB. The excellent damage resistance occurred at an RSF content of 0.5%; thus, this content is recommended for engineering applications.

A high-speed train travelling from the open air into a narrow tunnel will cause the "sonic boom" at tunnel exit. When the maglev train's speed reaches 600 km/h, the train-tunnel aerodynamic effect is intensified, so a new mitigation method is urgently expected to be explored. Effect of pulse current and its application direction on the size effect of nanocrystalline nickel foil

Authors: WANG Yi-yan, LI Chao, CHEN Zi-shuai, DU Jin-yang, LI Feng

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the effect of pulsed current on the mechanical properties and size effect of nanocrystalline Ni foils, nanocrystalline Ni foils with different grain thickness-to-grain size ratios (Ξ») were prepared using pulsed electrodeposition in this paper and unidirectional tensile experiments were carried out at room temperature with different currents and their applied directions. The experimental results show that the nanocrystalline Ni foil produces an obvious electroplasticity effect after applying the current field, and when 300< Ξ» <1100, the current weakens the size effect of nanocrystalline Ni foils to a certain extent, and the angle between the current direction and the deformation direction also affects the mechanical response of nanocrystalline Ni foils, and when the angle between the current direction and the deformation direction is 0Β°, electroplasticity effect is the best, and the current has the most significant effect of abating the size effect of the material. The mechanism of unidirectional tensile deformation of nanocrystalline Ni foils under the effect of pulsed current was analyzed using TEM and TKD. It was found that the applied pulse current increased the activity of the nanocrystalline boundaries, promoted the movement of dislocations, and reduced the tendency of dislocation entanglement. The higher the peak current density and the smaller the angle between the direction of the current and the direction of deformation, the smaller the grain boundary orientation difference, the more dispersed the grain orientation, and the lower the density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) in the deformed nanocrystalline foil, the more significant the effect on material plasticity improvement.

Characteristics of stress thresholds of granite after triaxial dynamic impact treatment

Authors: PENG Kang, LIU Xu, YIN Xu-yan, ZHANG Yun, CHANG Yang-kai, LUO Song

The geostress and rock blasting in underground engineering may greatly affect the stress thresholds of surrounding rock. In this study, pre-damage impact tests were first conducted on granite under varying confining pressures (5, 10 and 15 MPa) and numbers of impacts (1, 5, 10 and 15 impacts). Then, uniaxial compression tests were undertaken on the pre-damaged granite to study the evolution of stress thresholds using the crack volume strain method and acoustic emission method. The crack damage stresses determined by the two methods were compared. Additionally, based on the rise time amplitude and average frequency, the evolution law of microcracks inside rock specimens was revealed, and an improved acoustic emission method was proposed. The results indicated that as the number of impacts increased, the crack closure stress, crack damage stress, and peak stress of granite specimens initially rose and then declined, while they continuously increased with the confining pressure. The proportion of shear cracks first declined and then rose with greater number of impacts and decreased with higher confining pressure, and that of tensile cracks showed the opposite trend. The improved acoustic emission method was more accurate in identifying the crack damage stress.

Authors: DONG Hai-pei, YANG Jin-lin, ZHOU Wen-tao, YU Xu-yang, MA Shao-jian, WANG Ding-zheng

Red mud is a solid waste discharged in the process of alumina production, and how to realize the efficient recovery of its iron is an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, the iron extraction test and mechanism study of high-iron red mud were carried out under the coupling conditions of multiple physical field (microwave field, gas-solid flow field and temperature field) with biomass as the reducing agent. The test results showed that under the optimal conditions, an iron concentrate with a yield of 78.4%, an iron grade of 59.23%, and a recovery rate of 86.65% was obtained. The analyses of XRD, XPS, TEM, and SEM-EDS showed that during the roasting process, the hematite in the high-iron red mud was completely converted to magnetite, and the biomass produced the reductant that provided the magnetization reaction; A large number of cracks and pores appeared in the surface of the hematite reduction product particles, which helped to induce iron minerals to undergo effective mineral phase transformation. The above study provides ideas for the phase transformation and efficient recovery of iron minerals in red mud.

Analysis of meshing characteristics of planetary gear system considering tooth surface roughness and elastohydrodynamic lubrication

Authors: LIU Ning, MA Hui, GUAN Hong, ZHOU Sai-nan, ZHAO Tian-yu, CAO Peng, WU Yu-ping

The contact characteristics of the rough tooth surface during the meshing process are significantly affected by the lubrication state. The coupling effect of tooth surface roughness and lubrication on meshing characteristics of planetary gear is studied. An improved three-dimensional (3D) anisotropic tooth surface roughness fractal model is proposed based on the experimental parameters. Considering asperity contact and elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL), the contact load and flexibility deformation of the tooth surface are derived, and the deformation compatibility equation of the 3D loaded tooth contact analysis (3D-LTCA) method is improved. The asperity of the tooth surface changes the system from EHL to mixed lubrication and reduces the stiffness of the oil film. Compared with the sun-planet gear, the asperity has a greater effect on the meshing characteristics of the ring-planet gear. Compared with the proposed method, the comprehensive stiffness obtained by the traditional calculation method considering the lubrication effect is smaller, especially for the ring-planet gear. Compared with roughness, speed and viscosity, the meshing characteristics of planetary gears are most sensitive to torque.

Dynamic mechanical characteristics of post-peak sandstone under three-dimensional cyclic impact

Authors: ZHANG Jun-wen, ZHANG Yang, LI Shi-fang, SONG Zhi-xiang, DONG Xu-kai, WU Shao-kang, FAN Wen-bing, ZHOU Yan, SANG Pei-miao, LI Ning

At present, the surrounding rock of the deep mine roadway is prone to post-peak stress under the action of high stress, and secondary rock burst disaster is prone to occur under complex stress disturbance. According to incomplete statistics, as of 2023, 80% of coal mine rock bursts accidents in China occur in mining roadway. In view of this phenomenon, the cyclic impact test of post-peak sandstone is designed, focusing on the post-peak stress state of sandstone, and exploring the post-peak dynamic response of sandstone. The post-peak sandstone specimens were prepared by a uniaxial compressor, and then cyclic impact tests were carried out on the post-peak sandstone under different coaxial pressure conditions by an improved separated Hopkinson equipment. The results show that: 1) The number of impact times required for sandstone failure after peak decreased with the increase of axial pressure, indicating that the impact tendency of sandstone after peak decreased under lower axial pressure. On the contrary, the post-peak sandstone had strong impact tendency under higher axial pressure; 2) The higher the axial pressure, the lower the dynamic strength of the post-peak sandstone, indicating that the axial pressure promoted the failure process of the post-peak sandstone; 3) It was a nonlinear evolution of a quadratic polynomial function between the dissipation-energy release rate and axial pressure; 4) Shear failure occurred mainly in post-peak impact sandstone with the increased axial pressure, and the composite failure of intergranular failure and transgranular failure changed to single intergranular failure at the microscopic level. The research shows that when the roadway surrounding rock was in the post-peak stress state, reducing the static stress was the key to prevent the secondary ground pressure disaster. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of roadway rock burst disaster under high ground stress environment, and promote the research and exploration of post-peak mechanical properties of coal and rock.

In the practical slope engineering, the stability of lower sliding mass (region A) with back tensile cracks of the jointed rock slope attracts more attentions, but the upper rock mass (region B) may also be unstable. Therefore, in this study, based on the stepped failure mode of bedding jointed rock slopes, considering the influence of the upper rock mass on the lower stepped sliding mass, the improved failure model for analyzing the interaction force (FAB) between two regions is constructed, an

Design of a novel discrete dual-switching tracking differentiator

Authors: HAN Kun, ZHANG Hao-bo

Signal filtering and differential acquisition are classic yet challenging issues in control engineering. The discrete-time optimal control (DTOC) based on classic tracking differentiator (TD) can effectively extract differentiation signals and filter signals, while eliminating the chattering problem that arises during the discretization of the continuous solution. However, under external disturbance, the convergence mode may change, leading to overshoot and noise amplification. In this paper, a

A novel five-axis on-machine measurement optimization method for complex curved surfaces

Authors: Guo Yan-heng, Wan Neng, Zhuang Qi-xin

On-machine measurement (OMM) stands out as a pivotal technology in complex curved surface adaptive machining. However, the complex structure inherent in workpieces poses a significant challenge as the stylus orientation frequently shifts during the measurement process. Consequently, a substantial amount of time is allocated to calibrating pre-travel error and probe movement. Furthermore, the frequent movement of machine tools also increases the influence of machine errors. To enhance both accura

Failure behavior of rock and steel slag cemented paste backfill composite structures under uniaxial compression: Effects of interface angle and steel slag content

Authors: HAO Jian-shuai, ZHOU Zi-han, CHEN Zhong-hui, CHE Zeng-hui

Abstract: The stability of the β€œsurrounding rock-backfill” composite system is crucial for the safety of mining stopes. This study systematically investigates the effects of steel slag (SS) content and interface angle on the strength and failure characteristics of rock and SS-cemented paste backfill composite specimens (RBCS) through uniaxial compression strength tests (UCS), acoustic emission systems (AE), and 3D digital image correlation monitoring technology (3D-DIC). The intrinsic mechanism by which SS content influences the strength of SS-CPB was revealed through an analysis of its hydration reaction degree and microstructural characteristics under varying SS content. Moreover, a theoretical strength model incorporating different interface angles was developed to explore the impact of interface inclination on failure modes and mechanical strength. The main conclusions are as follows: The incorporation of SS enhances the plastic characteristics of RBCS and reduces its brittleness, with the increase of SS content, the stressβˆ’strain curve of RBCS in the β€œstaircase-like” stage becomes smoother; When the interface angle is 45Β°, the RBCS stressβˆ’strain curve exhibits a bimodal feature, and the failure mode changes from Y-shaped fractures to interface and axial splitting; The addition of SS results in a reduction of hydration products such as Ca(OH)2 in the backfill cementing system and an increase in harmful pores, which weakens the bonding performance and strength of RBCS, and the SS content should not exceed 45%; As the interface angle increases, the strength of RBCS decreases, and the critical interface slip angle decreases first and then increases with the increase in the ES/ER ratio. This study provides technical references for the large-scale application of SS in mine backfill.

Optimization of crosswind stability for high-speed trains: Aerodynamic analysis of leeward winglet deflection angles

Authors: HUANG Feng-yi, SHANG Wen-fei, ZHANG Jie, KRAJNOVIĆ Siniőa

The stability of high-speed trains under crosswind conditions has become a key consideration in aerodynamic design. As running speeds continue to increase and car body weight decreases, crosswinds pose a greater risk to train safety, significantly lowering the critical wind velocity. Therefore, developing strategies to enhance crosswind stability is essential. This study focuses on the leeward region adjacent to the train body, where separated flows with large vortices generate significant negative surface pressure. Enhancing this negative pressure distribution is proposed as a potential method to improve a train’s resistance to overturning. To achieve this, winglets are installed on the leeward side as a flow control measure, and their effects at different deflection angles are evaluated. The influence of five deflection angles on the leeward-side flow field and aerodynamic loads is analyzed, considering the head, middle, and tail cars. Results indicate that a deflection angle of 90Β° optimally reduces the overall overturning moment by 27.6% compared to the baseline model in a three-car configuration. These findings highlight that optimizing the winglet deflection angle to approximately 90Β° can significantly enhance a train’s resistance to overturning, offering valuable insights for aerodynamic optimization in strong wind conditions.

The existing analytical models for umbrella arch method (UAM) based on elastic foundation beams often overlook the influence of the surrounding soil beyond the beam edges on the shear stresses acting on the beam. Consequently, such models fail to adequately reflect the continuity characteristics of soil deformation. Leveraging the Pasternak foundation-Euler beam model, this study considers the generalized shear force on the beam to account for the influence of soil outside the beam ends on the s

Improved model-based study of backfill stress distribution considering rock-backfill closure, mine depth, and position along stope length

Authors: LIU Chun-kang, WANG Hong-jiang, WU Ai-xiang, LI Hao

During upward horizontal stratified backfill mining, stable backfill is essential for cap and sill pillar recovery. Currently, the primary method for calculating the required strength of backfill is the generalized three-dimensional (3D) vertical stress model, which ignores the effect of mine depth, failing to obtain the vertical stress at different positions along stope length. Therefore, this paper develops and validates an improved 3D model solution through numerical simulation in Rhino-FLAC3
